Up or down?

Canon 7d/ Canon 17-40mm F4 L series lens. UV filter. Induro tripod and ballhead. Three image HDR. Initial capture @ ISO 100, 17mm, F 11 @ .8 seconds. Spiral staircase at a home in Shelburne, Vermont.

A few weeks ago I posted this image of a spiral staircase that I took in a home I was shooting for a commercial job.  This is the second image in that series and this image is from the second or middle level of the home.  I was drawn to this feature of the home and to me it dominated everything else. Any which way that you looked at it were these awesome visuals and great lines and perspectives.

In this HDR image I was really going for the blown out highlights from the sun coming through the windows. I knew it would be near impossible even in a HDR image to tame the highlights here but the interesting effect of shooting for it was the spiritual, ethereal, halo effect of the light in the window. It made for some interesting shadows that I thought worked well here in black and white! On a side note all of the wood on the staircase was sourced from the lot that this house was built on…Really cool feature of the home.

  1. This is fascinating. I love it. you’re right that the blown highlights work well, and I also like the mysterious something on the wall between this floor and the one above: an alcove? shadow?, window? I don’t know, but I love it. Extremely well done.
